SnippetBox — All features
Keep text, Markdown, and code snippets organized, find them by meaning or keywords, and reuse or export them.
Free and open-source. View source on GitHub.
Writing & reading
- Markdown editor — Write with a split-view live preview, tab indentation, and formatting shortcuts.
- Readable code — View syntax-highlighted code blocks and copy a block with one click.
- External links — Open links from snippets in your default browser.
- Quick copy — Copy an entire snippet to the clipboard and keep track of how often you reuse it.
Search & discovery
- Search by meaning — Find related ideas even when your search does not use the exact words in a snippet.
- Keyword search — Find matches across snippet titles, content, tags, and extracted keywords.
- Combined search — Use hybrid search to combine meaning and keyword matches, or switch to either mode individually.
- Offline search — Built-in semantic search runs on your computer without an API key or a cloud service.
- Related snippets — Explore up to ten related snippets from the active snippet's detail view.
- Automatic keywords — Browse an automatically generated keyword cloud and select keywords to narrow results.
Organization & bulk actions
- Colored collections — Create and rename collections with personalized colors.
- Tags and favorites — Label snippets and keep frequently used entries close at hand.
- Scoped filters — Combine multiple collections, tags, languages, and date ranges to narrow your library.
- Flexible selection — Select snippets with checkboxes, Shift-click, or Command/Ctrl-click.
- Bulk actions — Move, tag, favorite, export, or delete multiple snippets together.
Workspace & navigation
- Tabbed viewing — Keep several snippets open and choose whether the next selection opens in a new tab or the current one.
- More room to read — Collapse snippet details or hide the browser into a compact rail when you need a larger workspace.
- Sorting — Sort by best match, newest, oldest, recently updated, title, or most copied.
- Interface scaling — Adjust the interface size with saved settings and keyboard zoom shortcuts.
File & folder imports
- Text and code files — Import text, Markdown, MDX, and source-code files into a chosen collection.
- Whole-folder imports — Scan folders recursively, importing supported text files while skipping binary files.
- Background progress — Continue using the app while files import, follow progress, and resume interrupted import jobs after startup.
Export & sharing
- PDF documents — Export one snippet or a selection as formatted PDF documents.
- Standalone HTML — Create browsable HTML exports with search, light and dark themes, syntax highlighting, and copy buttons.
- JSON data — Export snippet data as JSON for use in other tools.
- Multiple formats — Choose several export formats at once, follow progress, and open or reveal the completed files.
Local storage & search settings
- Custom library location — Choose a folder and database filename; SnippetBox copies your library and remembers the new location.
- Backup and restore — Create a library backup, inspect a backup before restoring, and confirm before replacing current data.
- Optional search provider — Use a compatible local or remote search service instead of the built-in model, and test the connection in Settings.
- Search index controls — Rebuild the search index from Settings; keyword search remains available when a semantic-search provider fails.
Good to know
- Built-in search works offline. If you choose a remote search provider, text selected for indexing is sent to that provider.
